Mark GERTLER
Study of a Female Nude

Mark Gertler painted this female nude in 1918. It belongs to the English Collection of the Northampton Museum and Art Gallery.

The painting was painted on millboard, a rather absorbent base for paintings. The picture was covered in a layer of grey dirt and discoloured varnish, which hid the soft pastel colours of the painting.

Process
I removed the layer of dirt, then the varnish and spray varnished the painting to return it as far as possible to look as it would have done when it left Gertler’s studio.
