Common PROBLEMS
Frequently encountered picture damage

These photos demonstrate a few of the more common problems that can happen to a painting during its lifetime. External factors such as physical damage and environmental conditions play a great part in the deterioration of a painting. Layers of protective varnish discolour, and dirt caused by such things as cigarette smoke, placing a painting above a radiator or coal fire, and atmospheric pollution add grime to the painting.

Paintings are very vulnerable objects whether they are painted on canvas, panel, board, card or other supports. They are easily damaged by transport, packing and clumsy handling.
